Map and compass training strenuous hike

If you like exploring the great outdoors but struggle with direction, this training is perfect for you. This crash course will teach you the basics of navigation using a map and compass, identify landmarks, and take a bearing, allowing you to hike anywhere in the world, including places with no trails and “obvious” landmarks.

The Wilderness Patroller members will hold the navigation and off-trail class that covers 2 miles round trip on uneven terrain. Consequently, you need to bring at least 3 liters of water, a backpack containing enough food for a day hike, and proper hiking attire (e.g., hiking boots, a hat, sunglasses, etc.)

  • Date: 8:45 AM, July 23, 2022 (The hike is expected to be completed at around 2 PM.)
  • Location: The Long Valley Ranger Station (meeting venue)
  • Cost: $28.95 for the tram ticket (You need this ride to arrive on time at the meeting venue.)

Monument Night Adventures

When you look at the desert during the daytime, you’d probably think it’s nothing but a barren wasteland. Contrary to belief, nighttime reveals a lively scene as insects and reptiles emerge to hunt and eat.

Suppose a desert night adventure sounds appealing to you. Consider a family-friendly event where participants take a short walk to observe nocturnal animals in their natural environment.

When you attend this event, make sure that you wear closed-toed shoes and bring water.

  • Date: 8:45 PM (check-in) / 9:00 PM – 10 PM (actual hike), Sat., July 23, 2022
  • Location: Art Smith Trailhead, Highway 74, Palm Desert, CA 92260
